Morris Heights, New York, NY Neighborhood Review User Rating 3 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 10, 2014) I have lived in Morris Heights during my early teenage years after just moving to New York City with my family. I still clearly remember the distinct boundaries that have defined this neighborhood of the Bronx. The Harlem River, I-95, Jerome Avenue and 179th Street clearly lay ou ...Read More t the borders of this neighborhood. As a teenager living in Morris Heights, I enjoyed that convenient location that is only minutes away from some of New York City's top attractions.

I vividly remember my exciting walks to Yankee Stadium on game day. To beat the crowds of the subway, I simply walked along with family and friends to enjoy great MLB action literally in my backyard. Additionally, the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Gardens also attracted my family and plenty of my neighbors from Morris Heights. It was only about a 30 minute walk or a 20 minute MTA bus ride between my apartment complex and these wonderful family friendly attractions. The heavily urbanized character of Morris Heights is somewhat of a double edged sword. One on hand, there is plenty of affordable housing in high rising apartment complexes. Some of these buildings have been converted to condominiums with waterfront views over the Harlem River and the Hudson River. On the other had, there is an overcrowding issue and a feel of being trapped in an urban jungle full of brick and concrete. Located just across Morris Heights, Harlem River Park offers green space in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the Bronx. This waterfront area attracts plenty of visitors since Morris Heights had limited large green spaces that are mostly playgrounds near some of the housing projects.

The shopping and dining experience in Morris Heights is typical of most NYC neighborhoods. Busy streets such as Jerome Avenue are lined with small family owned businesses such as delis, bodegas, convenience stores and ethnic restaurants. It is quite a contrast to any shopping and eating experience in a suburban upstate New York setting where I would later move to from Morris Heights. With multiple subway stations in Morris Heights and the George Washington Bridge just minutes away, getting around this neighborhood by car and public transportation is never a big problem. However, parallel parking a vehicle in the streets of Morris Heights is a major issue. Read Less
