The Other Side Of Harlem, New York, NY User Rating 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Sep 06, 2012) I've lived in Harlem, New York for the past decade. I moved to Harlem from the Midwest and expected to see the typical Hollywood stereotype of the neighborhood. You know, the Apollo Theatre, several hole-in-the-wall diners, and Asian owned wig stores. But, to my surprise, I disco ...Read More vered a community rich in both history and culture. Harlem was founded in 1637 by Dutch immigrants, then Jewish immigrants in the 19th century. African Americans immigrated to the area in the 1920s bringing with them the opening of a number of establishments known for good food and music. Soon, the area became a magnet for aspiring Black artist and writers.

I enjoy visiting the historic venues for Black performing artist like the internationally known Apollo Theatre or Lenox Lounge with its zebra room and Art Deco architecture. But, I also enjoy newer venues like The Shrine World Music Venue also known as a modern day Lenox Lounge. Its a places for multimedia artist to perform or showcase their artworks. The building has a cinema, dance floors, catering kitchen, full bar, and holds monthly art exhibition. I also attend art exhibitions at The Studio Museum in Harlem. Its a place where artist of African American descent can display their artworks. The museum was opened in 1968 and has education programs and exhibitions for the public to attend.

After a day of shopping at the African Market or eating a hearty down-home soul food meal, I take my guest to one of Harlem's parks. Harlem has several parks for families to spend the day playing basketball, having picnics, or exploring landmarks. The historic Morning Side Park has 312 acre for visitors to explore. It is located on the site of the Battle of Harlem Heights fought during revolutionary war. The Marcus Garvey Park is one of the oldest public squares in Manhattan. It was originally called Mount Morris Park in the 19th century, but, was remained in 1973. Exploring the parks and landmarks around Harlem has given me a new respect for the community. Read Less
