Brooklyn's Deep South User Rating 4 rating By Anonymous ( Sep 05, 2012) Gravesend and Sheepshead Bay are adjoining neighborhoods in southern Brooklyn, one of New York City's five boroughs. I lived there for about 10 years, loved it then and I wouldn't mind living there again, for it's gotten even better.

Gravesend, nowhere near as forbidding as its
...Read More name, is almost suburban in feel. Small brick homes, often housing two or four families, are typical of the housing stock, along with many six- and 7-story apartment buildings, either rentals or condominiums. It's laid out in a grid pattern, sensible and easy to navigate. It has stations for several subway lines, so getting about is easy. There are parks interspersed throughout, public and parochial schools and excellent shopping along 86th Street, the main drag. A stalwart, predominantly Italian neighborhood when I lived there, it is more polyglot now since recent influxes of Syrian Jews and Russians.

Sheepshead Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, abutting Gravesend's southern border, is still home to fishing fleets. It is the more dynamic neighborhood, with more stores, more restaurants, and the tang of the salt air cutting through it all. It is heavily populated, with a large number of apartment buildings, many with views of the ocean or bay. If you want a seafood dinner in New York, this is the place you'll come; sadly, Lundy's, seafood restaurant extraordinaire, is no more.

The elevated portion of the subway system runs overhead along Sheepshead Bay Road, a main thoroughfare. Again, for shopping, dining, movie-going, it's a very self-contained neighborhood. The Belt Parkway, aptly named as it circles the perimeter of both neighborhoods, is the main highway leading to either Manhattan or east onto Long Island. Transportation to other parts of New York City is facilitated by the myriad subway and bus lines that crisscross the area. The Atlantic's beaches are just minutes away. Read Less
