My Hometown: Miami Gardens FL 2.5 rating By Anonymous ( Feb 17, 2015) I lived in Miami Gardens, Florida from the time I was one years old until I graduated from high school in 1978. The population is small with a diverse international presence. The area is mostly suburbs with apartments and older subdivisions. There are a few new subdivisions that ...Read More are really nice. For example, there is Coconut Cay, which has homes valued into the half a million dollar range. You'll also find some exotic cars and professional football players who live there. If you know exactly where they live, you may even take part in some celebrity watching. There are quite a few churches and other religious buildings in the area. There are several decent schools in the area including high school, junior high and elementary which are in the Dade County school system. There is also bus public transportation.

The Sun Life Stadium is located in the city, which was originally Joe Robbie Stadium. It was built for the Miami Dolphins. Sun Life is also home to the Florida Marlins. It's not unusual to see the Goodyear blimp during games. There are special events held throughout the year at Sun Life, such as the annual Jazz festival. The traffic is not bad even when there are games or events. There are not any major malls in Miami Gardens although; there are quite a few strip malls. There is no real night life and never has been.

You can find a variety of restaurants with fare from around the world, such as Cuban, Caribbean cuisine, Asian and Italian just to name a few. There are no beaches because it is located five miles inland. Publix which is one of the largest employers in the state has a distribution center here. I like the city and still have family there. I get home for a visit at least twice a year. Read Less

Compare Miami Gardens, FL Livability

      vs

      Miami Gardens, FL

Miami Gardens is a suburb of Miami, and it was incorporated as the 33rd city into Miami-Dade County back in 2003. With a population over 100,000, it is in the top five for largest cities in the county. Getting to Miami from Miami Gardens is easy as it is a quick jump on Interstate 95. Miami Gardens offers its residents a lifestyle that is a little bit more laid back than the craziness that is South Beach or Miami, and it offers a cost of living that is significantly lower than the glitz and glamour of Miami. At approximately 20 square miles, it does not take long to get from point to point in the city.

One of the areas most famous attraction is Dolphin Stadium. This is the old venue that both the Dolphins and Florida Marlins called home before new stadiums were built for them in different parts of the county. There are some great memories from Dan Marino's time slinging the ball over the field to a group of amazing Dolphins' receivers. Amelia Earhart Park is one of the city's most beloved places to relax since it has acres and acres of beautiful green grass that help you transport yourself into nature. Oleta River State Park is a photographer's dream with its beautiful water features and interesting topography.

Public transit is available for those who live in Miami Gardens and are looking to give up life behind the wheel. The Miami Gardens Express offers limited services within city limits, and it is possible to connect with Miami's more extensive public transit system to get to the city proper. Cycling is also a viable option to get around the city due to its small size and reliable road network.

Scott Lake and Andover Lake Estates are areas of the city that are attractive for those looking to buy or rent a home. Baptist Health South Florida, American Airlines, and Florida International University are a few of the area's largest employers who provide a steady income for a large number of the city's residents. Home prices in Miami Gardens are very affordable when compared with prices paid in Miami. The city also offers residents a lot of solid school options from elementary to high school.

The city has a large selection of ethnic restaurants that are delicious. Yarumba Restaurant and Lounge and Awash Ethiopian Restaurant are a couple that stand out for their amazing flavors and unmistakable charm. A popular option for residents is to get a meal to-go and then driving over to Greynolds State Park for a relaxing picnic lunch. The area is a wooded oasis with the opportunity to golf or camp with the family.
