I lived in the Galleria-Uptown Houston area from February 2007 to July 2009. Both the neighborhood and surrounding areas were considered upscale communities. Both residential and commercial real estate were high valued property. The area was culturally diverse and that was a str ...Read More
ong point for me deciding to live in this area. The Galleria-Uptown area of Houston consisted of a square radius. Most of the housing was in the center of the area. There was a lot of upscale shopping from Prada to Hermes. The Galleria Mall was one of he most prestigious malls in the Houston area. There was a Westin Hotel in that Mall which made it a must visit for tourists. Being from California, I was not use humid weather. However, I was warm year round with flash floods every now and then. My last year there, I experienced a hurricane and that was the most frightening experience I ever went through. Because of where the Galleria-Uptown area is located, it is not common for a hurricane to come that far inland. When there are storm alerts along the coastal cities, Houston becomes very congested from those who are trying to escape the storm.
There was such a variety of occupations that were held by both the locals and some from abroad. The Oil & Gas Industry was at the top of the list in regards to revenue and Health Care was next on the list. We must not forget the merging real estate market in the Galleria area. There is an extreme amount of underdeveloped land which generates a lot of money for the community and those with ties to this industry. Real Estate Developers, Appraisers, Real Estate Agents, and Mortgage Brokers continue to work on expansion with a return of billions of dollars. The employment rate is very low compared to the rest of the world because of the millions of jobs available to keep the prominent industries running.
Basic living expenses are extremely low due to the price of everything. Gasoline is usually $1.00 less per gallon and food prices are more reasonable than it is in other parts of the country. The only thing that is priced higher than many parts of the country is property tax. However, it is not something that many complain about because a large portion of it goes to the schools. From elementary to the community college level, the school system is great.
