Gary's public transportation system consists of limited bus routes and early-ending service (no bus service at all on Sunday). It wouldn't be a big issue if it weren't for transportation being a dire necessity. Merrillville hosts a variety of high-priced shopping centers and a popular banquet hall, and further south on US 30 you'll find a plethora of department stores, restaurants and (subpar) motels. I've visited quaint little Southeast suburbs of Gary like New Chicago and Hobart, and I have to admit I like its beautifully rustic downtown area that looks like a movie set frozen in time. However, Miller, which is my personal FAVORITE is located northeast in a far more scenic setting. It's steps away from the Marquette Lagoon (aka Miller Beach) where lovely townhouses line sandy shores in the private sector, and further down is the Marquette Lagoon field house featuring picturesque views of nature, and breath taking backgrounds for photos of those special occasions. Miller also offers nature hiking trails, and small quiet neighborhoods where the more sophisticated and hospitable folk live. In my opinion, a visit to Miller Beach makes coming to Gary, Indiana worthwhile. Read Less

The residents were nice. The Miller Beach area which borders the Dunes National Park and Lake Michigan was beautiful -- a great place to relax. However there was no concessions area to cater to beach-goers.

The main commercial strip in the Miller area of Gary, Indiana was paved with red brick and had eclectic restaurants. We particularly enjoyed Miller Pizza and Miller Bakery Cafe.

Downtown Gary, however, was not a tourist attraction. There was a nice baseball stadium contrasted by a slew of aging, boarded-up buildings. There were few eateries and way too many vagrants.

The city of Gary did not seem ready for tourists. There's no welcome center, directories or guides at City Hall to provide maps of the best attractions or other interesting things to do. There were no shopping areas aside from discount stores. There are few hotels, requiring visitors to stay in the suburbs. The only real reason I could see visiting the city of Gary would be because Michael Jackson once lived there. Read Less
