I moved to DeKalb, IL about a year ago. I'm still getting used to the idea of being far from my home of Florida, but I had to make the move because of a job. I made it through my first winter in the northern area of the United States, and if you plan on moving to the area, pack p ...Read More
lenty off blankets and a heavy coat. Even though the weather is cold in the winter, the snow is beautiful to look at as it's on the ground.
Housing in DeKalb isn't quite as bad as I had thought. It's less expensive than it is where I grew up, but there are several apartment complexes instead of houses. I live in an apartment, and while the rent is affordable, there really aren't a lot of amenities that you might find at other complexes. If you travel to the edge of the city, you can see beautiful historical houses that look almost like cottages in their design.
This is a city that is built on manufacturing. It's not very hard to find a job if you want something in a factory or something that involves using the hands. There aren't that many shopping centers. The ones that I have found are owned by the people who live in the city. There are some larger chains, but this is a town that likes to focus on the small business owner. One of my favorite places to go Molly's Eatery and Drinkery. When there is a popular game on television, it can get crowded, but most of the time, it's a place to go for good company, especially after a long day at work. The beer is good, and the food served is made to order.
