A Hidden Gem User Rating 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jan 13, 2022) Decatur is one of Alabama's hidden gems. I moved here from Huntsville and the quality of life is much better than Huntsville even if upscale shopping and restaurants are mostly lacking. Decatur is a lush city, with many parks and spectacular river views. Half of the city is surro ...Read More unded by Wheeler Wildlife Refuge. The downtown is quaint and old fashioned, mostly locally owned and none of the chain stores that mar and homogenize other city downtowns. The Historic District has dozens of well-kept mansions from easier eras. Parts of the city are sketchy, especially on Moulton St., but not enough to affect the city as a whole. There is also little nightlife for those concerned with such things, but overall, I find the city to be a pleasant river city with a strong blue collar vibe. Read Less
Why Decatur, Alabama Will Always Be Home! User Rating 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Mar 23, 2012) Outside of Huntsville, Alabama, is a little town I call home; Decatur. My family still resides in this small town and when I visit I am overwhelmed with the southern charm the city boasts. While you won't find fancy streets like Rodeo Drive, you will find small streets with frien ...Read More dly neighbors waving as you pass. To some it may be a country little town, but to me it will always be the place that makes me feel warm inside.

Driving through the downtown area, you will find a normal city with hotels, quaint shops and restaurants. The Tennessee River is a favorite place of mine to visit, as well as many of the other locals. Boating, fishing and passing the day are a great way to spend time on such a nice river. Every time I go home, I always take my nieces to the River Wild children's garden to play. It is such a nice park that is clean and has ample equipment for children to enjoy.

My family loves the theater. Every year we go to The Princess Theater and watch a fabulous production. This little theater has been in existence since 1887 and is a great event for the whole family to enjoy. A night at the theater is every complete without dinner. There are ample dinner selections and ever kind of cuisines you could imagine. The prices are good and the food exceptional.

When selecting a neighborhood to live in, a family is usually concerned about safety. Decatur has some of the lowest crime rates in the state, which makes finding a house even easier. For those who might be interested in making Decatur home, the schools are top rated and there are two hospitals right in the city. With a great family atmosphere and being a safe, community oriented town to raise children, Decatur will always be home to me. Read Less
