As a former local and current frequent visitor to both Coalfield and Oliver Springs TN (we called all of it just Coalfield when I was growing up- now 45- and anyone sending anything through snail mail can tell you it doesn’t matter if you address it as either, it will still go ...Read More
to the right place as long as you have the address number and street name correct!) I currently live over 45 minutes south of the city of Chicago and my little town is far from rural and often referred to as rundown and trashy. In order to drive to any doctor, hospital, chain stores like Walmart, any fast food that isn’t McDonald’s and any actual bars and restaurants, it’s on average a 45 minute drive MINIMUM up to an hour EASY. My small town is a concrete wasteland full of condemned buildings, crammed with an unfriendly population of 8000+ and there is NO sense of community! Very much UNLIKE Coalfield or Oliver Springs, which are both absolutely gorgeous and seeing as I am related to over 80% of the population (2780+ in CF, 3400+ in OS) I can personally vouch for the amazing sense of community and friendliness of the residence there! The low livability scores are crazy and do not take into account. The fact that Knoxville is a 30 to 40 minute drive MAX is often, if not always, left out of any description of Coalfield or Oliver Springs! When it comes to healthcare, entertainment, nightlife, shopping both grocery/retail, you will find every single thing you need in Knoxville TN just 29-33 miles and a 30-40 min drive away MAX. I personally make the drive in about 20 minutes, but I’m also extremely familiar with the area, having driven back and forth across every inch of the state of Tennessee for 3 decades now as my family is spread out through the entire state of Tennessee, so wherever I’m going to or coming from, I am very familiar with the routes and the roads! Since the drive is winding and through the mountains, I would not advise anyone who does not know the route to attempt to drive it so quickly, especially considering it’s only a half hour going the actual speed limit!
So if you are looking into moving to Tennessee or any other state in the country and you are checking out some of the smaller more rural towns like Coalfield, please actually do your research when it comes to public livability scores that are only based on what is literally just in walking distance within these beautiful, very much livable, small towns! Oliver Springs itself does have a small grocery store, a general store as well as a pharmacy and that is all within walking distance pretty much wherever you’re at, that includes anywhere in Coalfield! A 30-40 minute drive is literally nothing compared to any other states with big cities like Chicago, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles etc. Knoxville is also home to the university of Tennessee, the Knoxville Museum of Art, the Tennessee Theatre, Market Square, which hosts various events, festivals, and concerts… it literally provides everything from the necessities to a vibrant downtown atmosphere both in culture and entertainment!
So anyone looking to live in a small town, no matter what state you’re looking in, always remember to look past these public facts that include only the public information legally stated for a certain small town and if you don’t know what it is, ALWAYS look up the nearest large and well known city to any tiny rural town you’re interested in possibly living in!! The nearest large city, depending on where you’re looking, could only be a 10 minute drive away and also provide whatever you need! These type of websites fail to include everything in the surrounding areas, so you have to do a little research yourself on top of just looking up the basic livability scores!! Good luck and for those of you who do settle on living in Coalfield, meeting me is inevitable lol, so see you when you get here! ~Callie~

So if you are looking into moving to Tennessee and checking out some of the smaller more rural towns like Coalfield, which is also unincorporated, please actually do your research when it comes to public livability scores that are only based on what is literally just within walking distance within these beautiful, very much livable, small towns! So living in Coalfield Tennessee as far from living in the middle of nowhere as everything I have currently read makes it seem, it’s beautiful, it’s on Incorporated, it’s rural, it’s full of a very open population with an extreme sense of community and it’s literally just outside of a vibrant large city full of culture, entertainment, and of course all necessities!
