Current resident who is very familiar with Cleveland’s neighborhoods 2 rating By Anonymous ( Aug 07, 2019) I lived in Cleveland’s Detroit/Shoreway // Gordon Square area for a total of 5 yrs. The first 2 I lived on w.65th just north of Detroit, there were a few shady neighbors but nothing really bad ever happened on our street. Night life in the area is pretty active, there is lots t ...Read More o do- a local theater as well as a 2 performing arts theaters, the whole beach is built up down at Edgewater Park now and you can hear live music playing throughout the summer (which it was great to see ppl enjoying themselves down there!) there are nice restaurants and bars. There’s also an old school arcade, coffee, Malt, and a beer and donuts shop. Most of these amenities are condensed to the w.65th and Detroit area but some new places that are great are scatter down the road in either direction. Approximately two blocks north of that area your at the beach a short 3 min drive to downtown, two blocks south is the franklin historic district (Franklin blvd.). The street is beautiful throughout the summer and is home to old large Victorian houses, some of the homes have historic relevance and are local tourists attractions themselves. My second residence in this area was near w.74th and franklin blvd. in 2016 (-2019). The neighborhood takes a dive once you get near Madison or Lorain rd. The whole area is still very much urban and it helps to keep that in mind if you plan to live there. It is not too uncommon to see homes on the market for $275,000+ then three houses down roach invested crime ridden pockets of residences. I learned very quickly how badly disruptive that can be. (Some) property owners do not care about regular upkeep and the sanitation of their dwellings. We had an apartment building next door that had a slum lord owner who stopped paying for dumpster service. Rotting garbage piled up for months outside. We called the city 3x’s, emailed the councilman and his assistant and never heard back from anyone. Due to the garbage roaches were coming into the house, we called an exterminator out 3x’s in less than a month but they still kept coming. We saw ppl. threaten each other with guns and knives and were in turn threatened by them for complaining about their criminal activity. Our cars were broken into. Packages stolen. We witnessed prostitution daily in plain sight. As much as we love the city, it was just too much for us. When I would tell ppl where I lived they always seemed to think it was a fun and exciting place to be, it really wasn’t though. If your in your twenties and living there to be close to the excitement of engaging in the nightlife activities that’s fine but for anyone else I suggest you thoroughly screen the neighborhood, gather what you can about your potential neighbors as well as the integrity of the property owners around you, because location can make a world of difference. Ultimately I wouldn’t recommend this area for permanent residence. Read Less
