      vs

      Cape Breton, NS

Cape Breton is a large island that sits on the Atlantic coast, with the Strait of Canso separating it from the Nova Scotia peninsula. The island is dominated by the Bras d’Or, which is one of the largest saltwater lakes in the world. Today, the lake plays a significant part in the island’s tourism industry, as does the Cape Breton Highlands. Still, most of the island’s economy comes from coal mining and fishing. There are also a number of commercial ports around the island, one of which is used for the Canadian Coast Guard College.

There are six main communities on Cape Breton, with Sydney being the largest and most populated. It is also the hub of its municipal offices, education and job market. The largest commercial centre in found in this area of the island, as is the airport, Cape Breton University and the island’s largest port. In terms of living, it is the most vibrant community on Cape Breton and where the largest selection of restaurants can be found, many of which serve seafood fresh off the fishing boats. Neighbouring Glace Bay is the second most populated community. It is often on the list of places to see, as it is a lovely area that is home to the Marconi National Historic Site.

Regardless of where you live, Cape Breton is extremely beautiful. It is a haven for outdoor lovers that want to live in a stunning place surrounding by magnificent landscapes. It also has a ton of history, with its residents being mainly of Scottish, Irish and English decent. There are also five Mi'kmaq Nation reserves, as well as a few French settlements. The culture s strong here, especially in terms of traditional fiddle music and square dancing, making it a fascinating place to live.

The cost of living in Cape Breton is quite low, with houses being extremely affordable. There are not a ton of rentals, though it is not a far cry to be able to rent a nice, quaint house somewhere on the island. The job market is also pretty good, and there is so much to see and do when you have time off. Any Cape Breton resident will list the Cape Breton Highlands National Park at the very top of things to see, followed by the Fortress of Louisbourg and the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site of Canada. Not to mention places like the Sydney waterfront, the pleasant town of Baddeck and Bay St. Lawrence. Cape Breton is also a fantastic place for whale watching, hiking, cycling and kayaking.
