City is Not Business or Real Estate Owner Friendly User Rating 1 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 14, 2019) Berea is a pretty city that is probably a nice place to live. Unfortunately, if you want to operate a business or own real estate here, the city will not be your friend. We owned real estate and a business in Berea for over 10 years and found the city take advantage of us on ma ...Read More ny occasions. For example, the school board would fight to raise our taxes every year, and for 7 years, the city hiked the value of our to 75% higher than what if sold for. Our appeals were continuously rejected. Eventually, we ended up spending thousands on an attorney to get the property valued at a fair market value, which still ended up being higher than sale price but at least within reason. We were charged an exorbitant late fee ($600) for a tax payment that the city claimed to have received 1 day late even though it was mailed 10 days in advance. The city refused to accept an appeal for a water bill for a leak we had in one of our properties which we thought had been repaired by a plumber because they do not accept appeals for "commercial" properties. So if you are looking at Berea as city to live in it would probably be very pleasant. If you want to do business here, I highly recommend finding a more business friendly city. Read Less
