, it left Alton with a great downtown filled with classic Victorian houses and fancy old storefronts.
And that sense of history is what I love about Alton. The area is filled with reminders that American Indians have lived here for thousands of years. Located at the intersection of the Mississippi, Ohio and Missouri rivers, it's been part of everything from the final Lincoln-Douglas debate to the staging area for wagons making their way across the plains in the 1800s.
What's especially nice is that while Alton is filled with history, it doesn't feel as if the town is stuck in the past. There are plenty of new stores and small businesses, and its proximity to to St. Louis means there are plenty of corporate jobs nearby. I love Alton and I get you would too.
