Whiteoak High School: The Life of Mowrystown

In a town with 299 people, it’s unlikely that Mowrystown will be on the national news. Life moves a bit slower than normal here; the people soak in life rather than tackle it head-on. However, the school within this town offers a spark of life to this sleepy town. The basketball games on Friday nights leaves no one alone in their house. Their 75% proficiency level is 7% higher than the state average; putting Mowrystown on the map. The school alone hosts 178 students out of the 299 people within the town. Overall, Whiteoak High School is the life in Mowrystown. Because it is such a small school, Whiteoak High School faces discrimination. The students appear to be “looked over” by the rest of the district in comparison. Academically, it is assumed that Whiteoak students will not succeed or pursue a further education. Those who assume this of Whiteoak students are only partially correct. However, while it is true that only 3% of Whiteoak students obtain a master's degree, other alumni have also become business owners, entrepreneurs, and successful employees. It is expected for Whiteoak students/alumni to push themselves in their careers. These students are known for being responsible and listening to those who rank above them. When viewing their administration and teachers, Whiteoak is full of people willing to help the students. Every teacher in the school hosts a club/team. The Spanish teacher is also the Jr. High cheerleading coach; the History teacher is the Student Council advisor; and the Art teacher is the Prom Committee advisor. Along with that, the district Treasurer was the former Junior Varsity Basketball coach; the District office assistant is one of the National Honor Society Advisors, and the Principal is an Assistant Coach on the Basketball team. Whiteoak High School has an abundance of teachers that are completely devoted to the students in the school. These people take on extra responsibilities in order to achieve success with the students. The physical school and facilities at Whiteoak are not in the best shape. The floors are dull and deformed, the classrooms are small and cramped, and the bathrooms are known for being marked with wall graffiti. However, the administration realizes that the school is not in the best shape, so they helped buy a brand-new gymnasium floor along with new baskets/rims for this gym. Along with the gym, after some renovation, the baseball diamond was recognized as #1 in the state. Because of this, the administration helped build a new baseball building, where the athletes practice their hitting/fundamentals. Despite having smaller classrooms, each class has its own Smartboard where teachers can display their presentations to the students in higher quality. Each student is also provided an iPad for academic purposes. Because of the new upgrades and renovations, Whiteoak’s academic ratings have sky-rocketed, allowing for Mowrystown to flourish. Finally, the sports at Whiteoak. In the past year alone, the Boys Baseball team has been to the Final Four in the state tournament, the Boys Cross Country team qualified for regionals for the first time, and the Boys Basketball team was selected to win their division for the first time in at least six years. Every athlete has defied odds and has achieved greatness due to the support from the community and administration. Most assume that Whiteoak sports cannot succeed because of the small student population, but these teams have broken these barriers. Whiteoak High School may not be the very best in all categories, but the relentlessness for the students to succeed is unmatched. Words cannot express how hard the children fight the discrimination placed on their town. The students realize that Mowrystown needs a beacon of light, so they strive to better their school. By doing this, the school single-handedly betters the community.
