Extremely disappointed with City Services and Police personnel 2 rating By ddumars1 ( Dec 04, 2017) I've lived in Garland for 2.5 years and purchased a house in a pleasant, diverse neighborhood. However, I have been extremely disappointed with the City Services and Police Department: 1) My neighborhood's streets are literally crumbling. Deep potholes cover the streets. The City ...Read More haphazardly fills them with asphalt, which breaks apart soon after. Light poles lean over and are not consistently lit. 2) I contacted my Councilperson about the issue with the streets. He never responded. After I emailed him again, along with the mayor and other City officials, he finally forwarded my email to another Department. He never showed the least interest in hearing my complaints as a citizen. 3) I've found the Police personnel extremely unfriendly. I went to the Police headquarters, seeking help about a serious personal problem. I was being threatened, which could easily result in investigation at the least, or even my arrest. The two police officers were extremely dismissive and barely polite. I felt as though I was on the defensive as a troubled citizen, seeking help from my Police Department. Additionally, police often drive their police cars and SUV's extremely aggressively around the city; driving very fast, passing dangerously close, and failing to signal (when the lights and sirens are off). I just wonder where and how my City taxes are being spent. Read Less

The fact that Garland is beautiful during all seasons may affect why everyone is so friendly. Not to mention, the quick four hour drive to the beach.

There are so many things to do here in Garland. The streets are lined with hundreds of restaurants of all styles, including my two favorite; Siciliano's, which has delectable Italian food, and Cristina's, which has authentic, and to die for, Tex-Mex. Just be careful when ordering soda though because everything is a Coke, including Pepsi. The "everything is bigger in Texas" mentality rings true when it comes to Texas shopping. While the shopping is not the best in Garland, Allen Premium Outlets, which is about a 20 minute drive from Garland, is the biggest outlet mall I have ever seen, with over 100 stores. It is a great place to spend a day with family or friends. The nightlife in Garland consists mainly of local sports bars, which isn't really my cup of tea, but Dallas is only a 25 minute drive away and the nightlife there is amazing.

All in all, Garland, Texas is a great place to live. A good central location for traveling to tons of Texas hotspots, and a community jam-packed with nice people and great food. You couldn't pay me to move. Read Less

Additionally, the city of Garland has a vast array of cultural arts centers, libraries, festivals, and live performances ranging from children's presentations to orchestra performances. If golf is a sport enjoyed, Garland has large golf complex that is used as part of the U.S. qualifying tour. The ethnic diversity is wide ranging, and the people move at a fast pace while still managing to maintain a friendly atmosphere.

Garland features many private mall complexes and some great shopping, as well as easy access to complexes in adjacent cities. Road improvement is the most difficult part of living in Garland, because, as with any developing area, they are always expanding the roadways. However, Garland is centrally located to several of the main roadways into Dallas and the surrounding area. Overall, I would highly recommend Garland to any single, couple or young family. Read Less

Garland is located less than 20 miles to the northeast of Dallas. The area offers a nice alternative for those who work in the Dallas metro area but do not want to deal with the hassles of city life. An interesting fact about the city is that a large section of the town was destroyed by a tornado in the 1920s. Today, the city has recovered nicely, and Garland is home to over 240,000 residents. Those who are looking to rent or buy in the area will be able to choose from a number of homes in great neighborhoods at prices all along the spectrum.

With over 2,800 acres of parkland and six rec centers, Garland is geared toward families with children. Hawaiian Falls Garland may be the best place to take the little ones on a summer afternoon. The park has a number of pools and waterslides that can help you beat the Texas heat. Rowlett Creek Preserve lets you get out in nature. The area has a large trail system that is perfect for a ride on the bike or a stroll with your dog on the leash. Spring Creek Forest Preserve is another nature area that is particularly beautiful in the spring. When the area's flowers are in bloom, you can see a beautiful splash of color on the horizon.

Garland has a lot of popular neighborhoods that new buyers check out when they are starting their hunt for a home. Firewheel Estates, Meadowood, Springpark, and Green Estates are great choices for someone who is looking for a lot of square footage with easy access to amenities. These neighborhoods also offer you access to some of the city's most respected schools. Hillside Academy for Excel, Kimberlin Academy, and Watson Technology Center are a few of the schools in the area that are frequently recognized by the state for excellence in education.

Traffic in Garland has become more of a problem in recent years as the city has enjoyed rapid growth. It is still relatively light, however; when compared with the traffic that you will find in Dallas and other parts of the metro area. The Dallas Area Rapid Transit System offers bus service to the Garland community. Getting around by bus is a safe and affordable alternative to operating your own vehicle.

As mentioned, one of the perks about living in Garland is the fact that you can access all of the Dallas amenities with an easy drive. If you want to head into town to watch the Mavericks play the Spurs, it is a quick drive down Interstate 30. Cowboys fans will be able to head over to Jerry World to watch America's team too.
