The museum was founded by Alice Walton, the widow of Wal Mart founder Sam Walton. The museum was opened in 2011, and instantly became one of the most prominent museums in the United States because of the breadth of its collection. The museum has been given an endowment of 800 million dollars by the Walton Familiy Foundation, and has spent over 200 million dollars on art acquisitions to date. As its name implies, the museum concentrates on works by American authors; prominent artist whose works are displayed in the museum included Norman Rockwell, Jackson Pollock, James Turrell, and Walton Ford. The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is open every day of the week except Tuesday. Museum hours are 11 am until 6 pm except on Friday, when the museum is open until 9 pm. Admission to the museum is free for self-guided tours.
