A Freshman's Perspective on GU

I'm only a semester into my time at GU, but so far, it's only about 3/4 of what it's cracked up to be. I adore the small class sizes (even though I was in core classes this semester, the largest class I was in had 30 students), and the small size of campus means that all of your classes are generally easy to get to on time. The campus is visually beautiful, and there seems to be a friendly atmosphere as you walk around (manifesting most prominently in the GU phenomenon of everyone holding open doors for everybody else). Gonzaga is an excellent school with a good reputation, but definitely more Catholic than advertised. Understandably, it's a Jesuit institution, and you would expect SOME everyday Catholicism, but everyone will assume that you are Catholic or that you went to a private Catholic high school, which is just something to be ready for. It simply took me off guard a bit, as when I was applying, many representatives of the school told me that there are many faiths "represented" on campus. Many GU students come from extremely privileged backgrounds, given the cost of tuition, and it is a predominantly white campus, and both of these factors translate into some undertones of classism and racism on campus, and throughout the student body. The administration is actively working towards improvements in regards to transparency and better treatment of historically marginalized groups on campus, but I marked their rating a little low because of the fact that demands for transparency have been made since 2002, and they're still "getting around to it." Despite all this, I have decided not to transfer away from GU next year. I believe this school will help me in my career, with its excellent mentor program and alumni network. All schools have areas to grow, and GU is no exception--but beginning college is hard, and the programs and events available for freshman at GU have helped me feel at home.

There are are many great things about Gonzaga University; the top notch academics, the small class sizes with teachers who truly care about you, the student life, extra curriculars, etc. The culture at Gonzaga is not just one thing like preppy, intellectual, or earthy. We are a very diverse community which is part of what makes the student life so great. This can also make it difficult to find your niche right away, but that's okay! There are many ways to develop strong friendships such as through classes, getting to know people in your residence hall, checking out some of the clubs Gonzaga offers, and even through work if you choose to have a job during the school year. The school is also very central to downtown which offers attractions such as ice skating, a movie theater, and plenty of options for shopping and dining.

Gonzaga University, located in Spokane, WA is a Jesuit university that believes in creating the best possible atmosphere for its students. First of all, although Gonzaga is a Jesuit university, they believe that there is no wrong religion, beliefs, or gender identifications. When walking around the campus or attending activities, you feel a connection throughout the community, and this creates the idea at Gonzaga that Zags help Zags. At Gonzaga, personal growth, and being more aware to the world around us are important goals that the university encourages. With a wide variety of clubs such as the environmental friendly clubs which are GEO or GRIG, sports clubs, major related clubs such as ASCE (for civil engineers) or IEEE (for electrical engineers), and lastly hobbies based clubs/groups such as BOMB squad or GUTS. All of these provide an opportunity for each student to find themselves within separate programs and ways as well as helping spread awareness on creating a more environmental friendly school or what is going on in the world.
