Becoming a Bruin

This fall I will know what it means to become a Bruin. A bruin is a kind of bear, which is what “Pennington” the school mascot is. This mascot is rooted in tradition, back in 1887 they had a live bear living on campus, hints the name “George Fox Bruins”. Bruins are ready, fearless, and strong. Bruins stand together and together, they stand tall.
I graduated high school in 2015, then attended several years of community college pursuing the welding program. What I learned from this time of my life was an exceptional work ethic, a deep love for people, and that I did not want to work a blue collar 9-5 day work week the rest of my life. Although a great career path for many people with an outstanding yearly income, this was not where my passions or heart was at. I knew there was something more for me out there, a purpose for my life that I was supposed to fulfill, I just didn’t know what it was yet. After the program, I was looking for a business that I could invest my life in or full time employment. I did not plan on going back to school, but could not help but hear people continue to mention this private Christian University around me. Finally giving into the possibility, I started asking around and even taking tours of the George Fox campus in Newberg, Oregon. Everyone I talked to, and still new people I talk to today have nothing but positive feedback, and heart felt memories of their time at Fox. After I toured the campus twice, and talked with professors and staff I gave in, I decided this would be my new home for 4 years. All the rumors were true, the community was absolutely genuine, they offer prestigious degrees with a wide range of career paths to major or minor in, and gorgeous scenery all around campus and in the little town of Newberg.
I am going to be attending Fox this fall of 2019, and double major in Christian ministries with a focus of Theology, and marketing. Although I can’t give the usual school review because I am not yet attending this school. I will give them a review of first impressions, and that of one of uncontainable excitement, high respect, and an abundance of hope for what the future holds. Maybe here is where I will find my passion and purpose. When I walk onto that campus, It feels like a family reunion of close relatives, who when they see me want to update me on every little detail of their lives and embrace me with a hug and a warm smile and say “we missed you, where have you been?”. Keep in mind I don’t even attend school here yet, which is why I’m ecstatic about going here and being a part of all this. I want to know what it means to finally feel ready. To feel fearless, instead of fear. To be strong, when I am weak. I can’t wait to learn what it means to stand together as Bruins, and to stand tall together. My name is Noah Rhea, and this fall I will become a Bruin.

I am very excited to start the MAT program in the summer of 2019. Unfortunately, I do not have enough funds to attend yet, but am not giving up on my dream in attending George Fox University. I know their education program is one of the best and will prepare me to become the best elementary teacher I can be.

I will be attending George Fox University in Fall of 2019 and I am so excited! I am going for a major in elementary education and a minor in Spanish. The times that I have been on campus have been inviting and warm. The staff is friendly and very helpful. I have a mentor who just graduated from George Fox last year and has already started her teaching career at a local elementary school! She cannot speak highly enough about how she grew spiritually, educationally and as a whole person. It speaks volumes of the education that you can receive at GFU by her gaining employment within a couple of months of graduating! I have stayed on campus 3 times now for college visits and for the scholarship competition. I stayed with volunteers in their dorm room and it was an incredible experience. I am so excited to attend GFU! Go Bruins!

When I decided to come to this school, I had no previous intentions of coming to college. However, when I stepped on the GFU campus, it felt like home. It was only an hour away from where I lived, so I was still close to home with the feeling of being away and living on my own. From the months on from my first visit to the day I moved in, I had nothing but excitement about what I was going to encounter. My first semester exceeded my expectations more than I could've ever imagined. I made the most wonderful, lifelong friends in my residence hall, I had a group of wonderful teachers who invested in my ideas, and the activities offered on the weekends created lasting memories. I have almost nothing but good things to say about this school, however my one complaint is some of the rules they have in place. Such as, your meals do not carry over the weeks if you miss one and you have to have at least 31 semester credits to change your meal plan from a 21 meals a week plan. Besides these minor issues, this school has provided me with wonderful opportunities and memories to last a lifetime.

This school went beyond my expectations in every way and I couldn't have chosen a more perfect school. The community and environment here overall is very quick and easy to adapt to. The professors here have made a positive impact in my education as well, and I never thought they would help me grow in my faith as I have seen in just my first semester here. I will forever be thankful for everything this university has done for me and for especially fulfilling the Be Known promise.
