I'm glad I go to a small town school. We have less than 100 students in each grade level. This allows most people to know each other or know each other's siblings. Many of us have gone to school together since kindergarten. We have grown up together.
I gave academics a rating of 8/10 due to the fact that we do not have as many teachers as other larger schools. This limits some of the elective classes we have available. We only offer one foreign language option and many classes only have one teacher that teaches that class. Scheduling can be difficult, especially during my senior year, because the classes I chose to take are only offered during one class period. If that conflicts with another class you are wanting to take, you have to choose.
Most of the teachers in our district live locally. Many of the teachers have been born and raised in the area. This allows teachers to have a great committment to the schools. They are friends and family with many of the students. They go to church, are neighbors, coach, and see each other daily outside of school in the community. Teachers have a duty to care for and educate the kids in the schools as they want their kids to be educated.
The administration in the district are caring. They are able to run the schools with consistency and fairness, yet flexibility to allow for individual needs of the kids in the district. Since we are a small school, the principals know the kids by name, and lots of times know their parents and grandparents. The administration is able to get to know students and help them in many ways, including communicating with parents frequently, understanding family situations, and just being a trusting adult students can talk to for help.
Lynchburg-Clay has many sports to offer. Due to smaller size, there is no football, wrestling, swim, or lacrosse teams, like many larger schools. Our schools excel in the sports arena for our region. The community is very supportive of the sports at the school. Students are able to bond through sports since they have likely played with each other since they were young. The competitive nature of the student athletes also carries over to academics. The students want each other to succeed and push each other to do well on and off the court.
The facilities of Lynchburg-Clay are average. The high school and elementary are less than 20 years old. The middle school is older, since it used to be the old high school. The middle school does not have enough room for all the classes it needs to house, resulting in the health class on the stage in the gym, study halls in the library, and limited areas for teachers to work with students in small groups. The high school and elementary have more space available but could still use more space. All the buildings are clean and well kept.
I am actually open enrolled to attend Lynchburg-Clay. I am happy with the education I have received at Lynchburg-Clay. If I could choose to go to the larger school district that I actually live in, I would choose not to attend it. I would choose small town Lynchburg-Clay again.
