As a senior who has attended Sandra Day O'Connor High School (SDOHS) for all four years, I've been able to pursue a unique academic path, take part in a plethora of extracurriculars, and engage in the best music programs in the state. SDOHS’ offerings in academics, sports, and clubs are unrivaled within the Deer Valley Unified School District and on a competitive level with the top public and private high schools in the entire state. O’Connor stands out because of its exclusive, award-winning academic programs. It hosts exceptional sports medicine, architecture/interior design, and AFJROTC programs. The campus even has its own on-site daycare for our child development courses. Our journalism-run school newspaper, The Talon, recently won #1 print and #1 online paper in the state from the AIPA. The Academy of American Studies program, exclusive to SDOHS, is a history-focused, four-year academic program which offers a full honors/Advanced Placement course load to incoming freshman. It is comparable to the education many private schools provide. Each graduating class from this program receives millions of dollars in scholarships towards their post-secondary education. One doesn’t have to be a part of this program to engage in the school’s multitude of rigorous, high-level course offerings. Besides many dual-enrollment courses, O’Connor features 20 Advanced Placement classes, across a variety of disciplines. Most classes not offered on-campus are available through online courses and WEST-MEC. The only areas that SDOHS falls short academically are its complete lack of IB courses and unusually weak representation of Computer Science based curriculum although there are plans to improve upon the latter. In sports and the arts, SDOHS is well above average. Many programs are consistently successful in the district, state, and regional levels. For example, the badminton, baseball, volleyball, beach volleyball, and tennis teams have won district and state titles over the past few years. In the arts, the choir and band regularly score Superior with Distinction in festivals and have many students that perform in regional, state, and national ensembles. The award-winning Eagle Pride Marching Band performed during the halftime show during Super Bowl XLIX, and also placed first in State in Division 1 in 2014, with top three showings in later years. The vast majority of teachers at O’Connor, at least through my experience, are what I would consider good or even exceptional at their job. It is likely that any student who graduates from SDOHS, no matter their chosen academic track, will come across at least one such instructor whom he/she will view as a role model and remember for years to come. However, there are also some that students will never forget for negative reasons. Thankfully, these are the exceptions, but they can still mar a student’s high school experience because of the added stress of coping with these teachers’ classes. There is little to complain about with the campus’ administration. They have a unique and comparatively rare quality: as a whole; they seem to understand what they must do for the school’s success and aren’t set in their ways when the time comes to introduce change. They take the students’ opinions into account and are quick to resolve issues. In addition, there aren’t any school rules that would seem unnecessary or unjust. It’s clear they care for the students. The facilities of the SDOHS campus are exceptional. It is relatively modern, constructed in 2003, with all the amenities one would expect and more. It is a tech-rich school, with many computer labs and SMART Boards in every classroom. It is also an Apple Distinguished School, which allows each student an iPad to use for their studies throughout the school year. The majority of the power that the campus uses come from its own solar panels, which makes the school incredibly energy efficient. The only downsides to the campus and facilities are its small size compared to other high schools in the district and its tendency to flood during the strong monsoon rains.Overall, Sandra Day O’Connor High School is a great high school to attend despite some minor flaws, thanks to its private school level academic offerings, award-winning programs in sports and the arts, knowledgeable administration, and modern, tech-rich campus.
