Exciting Urban Experience In Humboldt Park 3.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 06, 2014) I moved to Chicago right after college with some friends when I was in my early twenties and found myself living in Humboldt Park. Humboldt Park is a neighborhood on the North-West side of Chicago situated roughly between Western Ave and Pulaski on the East and West and appropria ...Read More tely enough North Ave on the North. Most people consider the train tracks south of Chicago Ave the lower border of the neighborhood. I lived in Humboldt Park for just about a year and can honestly say I enjoyed living there, even though now that I am raising a family it is not a place I would consider moving back to.

So to be totally blunt, at the time Humboldt Park was a neighborhood undergoing 'gentrification' and I was definitely a textbook example of that process in action. Traditionally, the area has a large Puerto Rican population and vibrant community. However as hip neighborhoods nearby like Wicker Park and Logan Square started to become too pricey, many young predominantly white people, like myself, started moving in because the rent was cheaper. When I lived in Chicago I worked downtown, partied in Wicker Park, and then finally stumbled home to Humboldt Park. This is not what most people would consider a 'family neighborhood', there is a lot of reported crime and when I moved there a lot of people warned me about this. I personally never had any problems here that I didn't encounter elsewhere, but I am a pretty cautious person.

There are alot of nice things to do in the neighborhood proper though; I definitely found some good places to eat. The first place to start in this regard is with the many latin restaurants situated along North Ave. Definitely check out 'Cemitas Puebla' for their sandwiches, and 'Feed' is a good slightly trendy place to get soul food. I went to 'The Flying Saucer' on California for breakfast alot, I pretty much got the same thing every time: eggs and pancakes, but they were really good! Another thing to remember is that the Humboldt Park neighborhood is named after a very large and very beautiful park of the same name. You're missing out if you don't have at least one picnic there when the weather turns nice. Go see the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture in the gorgeous Humboldt Park stables building while you're there. Overall I'm glad I moved to Humboldt Park at the time, but it's definitely not a neighborhood I wanted to settle down in. Read Less
