Honor Student’s Review

The student to teacher ratio is vital to my university: it enables me to be active in a classroom (of a small quantity), which coaxes the shy student within me to come forward- ravaging the classroom with my questions of integrity and curiosity. While flooding the lecture halls with questions, the lively professors, who all demonstrated that they have their best interest in regards to all of their students, I’ve worked with answered questions with ease. The professors I worked with also sacrificed their own free times and lunch hours to work and help students who strive to achieve the highest standards by reviewing past exams, conducting one-on-one labs, and by being academically engaging in meetings with students. The professors I have not worked with displayed wonderful work ethics. I see faculty memebers working with students at the HUB, a location in my university where everyone hangs out or visits the IT desk, where all members of the groups are focused, channeling all of their energetic energy into one collaborative project. I see friends chilling together in the lounge of my university, playing all sorts of games while chatting up a happy storm. Inside the school I also see the dedication of my university’s food employees, who all work effectively under pressured situations while effectively bantering with customers who order food. The only thing I don’t see happening outside on the campus’s grounds are the local geese leaving my campus!

An oldie, but a goodie.

I love Saint Xavier University! Honestly, I didn't know what to expect at the beginning. I knew it was a small school and has been a staple in the south Chicago area for many years, but once I walked the campus and met with administrators, teachers and students I realized that SXU is deeply rooted in tradition and everyone tied to the university wants nothing but the best for the students. I was surprised that many of their teachers actually hold a Ph.D and the course options that were available. I knew that it was a private, Catholic university and I assumed that the course options would reflect that and not be as progressive as I may like, but boy was I wrong! There are plenty of classes and activities that allow for open discussion and further probing in regards to things like sex and gender equality, the invention of race, spirituality, current events and more. As a first year student you have to take 2 religion classes and as a transfer you have to take 1, but it's not a chore. The options available for religious studies are so vast; you could take a class on Buddhism and it would suffice! The teachers truly care about your success and are honest people. The class sizes are small, so good luck trying to snooze during a 8 am lecture on Monday morning! I like the small class sizes though because it allows me to develop personal relationships with my teachers. I am more apt to be active in class, do my homework, study and, because of the close relationships, I am able to ask for and receive honest recommendations for work, internships and/or graduate school. The administration is also wonderful! They want you to succeed beyond measure, even though their daily interactions are minimal. I remember going to orientation and a man from records and advising remembered me calling the office and discussing the concerns I had in regard to my transcript all based on the unique spelling of my name! He wanted to make sure that everything had been resolved and if I had anymore questions. That kind of personal, quaint interaction is almost nonexistent in large schools, but at SXU it's just the norm. Our sports are fair, but we don't have a ton. Obviously we have football, baseball, volleyball, etc, but we aren't a top 10 school and it's not our main focus. That doesn't mean that our football games aren't super fun though! The facilities aren't modernized completely, although they are working on slowly renovating areas of the school. Many rooms have that older, "antique" feel which is perfectly ok and adds to the charm on the campus. Some rooms are MUCH warmer than others, especially in the summer, so wear shorts and light clothes and you should be ok - it's all part of the experience, especially when you are immersed in a historical area daily.Overall I love my school. It has it's perks and there are things that we may wish to change, but it's home. It's where I learn and where I grow as a person. I am very happy I chose to stay close to home and go to Saint Xavier! I know that when my journey is up and graduate school is upon me, I will miss SXU daily. Go Cougs!

A Great School!

Saint Xavier has a wonderful student body and helpful, compassionate faculty. Although the facilities are not necessarily the most updated, they are still great. The faculty and staff truly care about the students and active engagement in campus-related events.
