Once a bustling city, now crime infested and far from good 1 rating By Anonymous ( Sep 30, 2021) I was born and raised in York, seen the city when it was at its peak, bustling downtown, they had maple donuts, 7 & 7 shoe store, hot dog guy in the center square, or u get a steak sandwich n beef patty down the street, life was good. Economy was great, factories and industry was ...Read More steady, that’s when factories were still in the city and not outsourced. Believe it or not walking in the center square at times you couldn’t even walk it was so crowded, reminiscent of an NYC, or Philly type feel. People invested in their community, clean homes, I remembered coming from school and the this older lady, middle of the hood had flowers growing, and every week was hosing down the sidewalk, I asked why you doing that it’s not your sidewalk? n she said, “You need to care. We aren’t cavemen. Look around you, that’s because people stopped caring”. Man if that didn’t resonate till this day. It was a community, people parented their kids and the neighborhoods kids too, u couldn’t act out cause people see you n say “u so and so kid ain’t?” Times we’re different. But with that comes bad, drastic changes I would say 2005 is when york starting tanking. Yeah there were gangs and crime and fights but not as severe as it is today. Factories started closing, factory in front of my house closed as well, people left, in turn people stopped investing in the community, businesses started closing, I swear downtown was a ghost town now, it was like a sinking ship and everyone was bailing. Crime got worse, the people who cared left and those that replaced them made it worse. Friends killed from crime, friends n family sent to jail, Businesses come in to go out of business in a month or 2, it’s a never ending cycle. Now you have to lock your doors, you can’t blast speakers in your car cause someone will try n Jack you. Crazy thing is, it’s not the adults you have to watch out for now the kids are doing the crimes n the killing, younger and younger. York is a grim opposite of what it once was, n if enough people start caring there might be a change. Read Less
Minorities of Any Type Not Too Welcome 2 rating By Anonymous ( Feb 22, 2021) I moved out in 1972, so perhaps this review is unfair. We lived in the "2nd richest neighborhood", or so the kids said. It was very beautiful. I walked to the reservoir a lot and the campus of what was then York Community College. My compliments stop there. I walked a lot to t ...Read More hese beautiful places, because my siblings and I had no friends in the neighborhood. Our last name is Polish, we're Catholic, we only had one car, my father only had his masters from Univ of Michigan, not an Ivy League, and my parents bought an ugly California ranch and fixed it up. Therefore, the kids hated us. They were horrible. And I'm as white as snow - I'm a redhead. The kids at school weren't much better, although of course there were some nice kids. And I have to say my whole elementary school experience, education-wise, was very good, but it was the 60's. Fast forward 20 years, and my mother comes to find out her ancestor came to the US in 1666 from England. So we were close to "blue blood." Oh, if only those horrible families knew. But again, very beautiful, if you can afford to live in the higher-end neighborhoods. And if you're white, rich, well-educated and your last name is easy to pronounce to English speakers. Read Less
To overcrowded and to expensive 1 rating By Anonymous ( May 29, 2019) I was born and raised in York. York used to be a nice place. All it is now is : a overpriced, crime ridden dump. What a craphole! 0.5 rating By Foreign Object ( Jul 04, 2017) If I could give it a lower rating I would. I moved to West York from Manassas, VA. in July 2016. As a war veteran, I've experienced better places overseas where they actually hate Americans. This place is that bad. Happily, I will be moving out in a couple of weeks. I'm an A ...Read More frican American and I've never felt so unwelcome in a place in my entire life. I get here only to find that my (all white) neighbors will not speak unless I speak first. They look at me like I kicked their dog. My neighbors fight all the time. I find out that my former mayor is a devote racist and forget trying to report a near carjacking to the local police who have answering machines and never returned my phone call. If I wasn't packing I'd be without a car right now. I've been around the world and I've only wished nuclear annihilation on one place on the planet in my life and that's Cannes, France. I wasn't allowed service in a restaurant because I was an American soldier. Now I have two places. I wouldn't recommend West York to my worst enemy and that's why I'm leaving this sh*t box. It's noisy, it's dirty, they don't like minorities, it's over-priced, poor service on everything, overcrowded, overtly-racist, has high crime, and I don't recommend living here! Read Less
York, PA: Great Location in Central Pennsylvania 4 rating By Anonymous ( Jul 22, 2015) I've lived in York, PA since early 1999, when I moved to the area to accept a position in the state capital. Compared to where I grew up, this town is an excellent place to raise a family and have a good time. For me the location is perfect as it is about thirty minutes straight ...Read More up I-83 to my firm near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's capital. Into the city proper is another ten minutes or so depending on traffic which is usually not that bad. If you have to work in the capital for work you should definitely consider the better value that can be found outside of it in towns like York. If I knew what I know now about York when I was a young man, I might have moved here anyway to start a family regardless of work.

I personally am a history and nature buff, and this place is loaded with both. Not only does the town itself date to before the founding of the nation, but we are surrounded by history. Gettysburg is literally less than an hour away. There are also many Amish communities nearby. Hershey PA (of chocolate fame) is also very close.

The Susquehanna River is pretty but not clean enough (as far as I am concerned) for water activities. The best nature near York can be found to the west, the Appalachian Mountains. These low mountains are quite beautiful and offer tons of family-friendly adventure. As for York itself, it is nice, but not very "hoppin'." There are several great bars and gastropubs. I go to Holy Hound Taproom quite often. There are some clubs but they're not places I have ever been to or plan to visit. Read Less
