Shreveport, LA: Easy Living and Inexpensive

Shreveport, Louisiana, is the third largest city in the state. Along with its neighboring city of Bossier City, the metropolitan area covers four different parishes in the northwest corner of the state. Shreveport's population stands at about 197,000. Each year the population in Shreveport continues to shrink a little while Bossier is seeing a population explosion. While most of the economy continues to be based on oil and gas, Shreveport has the highest rate of durable goods manufacturing in Louisiana. The area is also growing in the number of technology jobs available. Many young men and women receive orders to report to nearby Barksdale Air Force Base where the oldest bomb wing in the United States is based.

Those without a vehicle are often thankful for Shreveport Area Transit who run buses throughout the city and neighboring Bossier City on over 15 different routes. Shreveport Regional Airport is a small regional hub serving over 300,000 passengers each year. The city is also served by Greyhound and buses allow passengers to catch Amtrak at nearby Longview, Texas.Waiting at the bus stop can get a little chilly in January when the average nighttime temperature drops to 36 degrees and a little warm in August when the average daytime temperature rises to 93 degrees.

Most students attend the Caddo Parish School System. In all, they operate 11 high schools. The highly ranked Caddo Magnet High School has won the national Academic Decathlon contest almost every year since its inception in 1963, and they have gained top honors in national debate contests. This system also has many other highly ranked schools. A low student-to-teacher ratio at all schools operated by the district helps students to receive individual attention. Since 1825, students have been receiving a quality education from Centenary College. The state also operates a campus in this community.

Real estate is very inexpensive in Shreveport compared to the national average and the surrounding area. Many people report being amazed at how cheap apartments are to rent in this city. This helps this city be an extremely affordable place to live.
