  • Loretto ChapelAttractions » Historic Landmarks207 Old Santa Fe Trail, 87501View siteLoretto Chapel in Santa Fe in New Mexico of the United States is an excellent example of Gothic revival architecture. In the 1870s, the chapel was designed by architect Antoine Mouly and built. Although much smaller, the structure with its details of buttresses, pinnacles and stained glass looks much like Paris' Sainte-Chapelle. However, the architect died before adding any stairway to the loft. The sisters of St. Loretto report that a stranger using only hand tools locked himself in the chapel and finished the staircase without any witnesses. Then when the staircase was finished, he disappeared. A work of art, the wooden stairway is constructed using only pegs and no central support or nails. Later, a hand rail was added for safety and attached to a nearby pillar. For those who want to tour the Loretto Chapel and its incredible staircase, a small admission fee is charged.
