Overall, Oregon City High School is a good school, but like with most places there are some areas that could be improved. The academics at the school are generally good with a lot of options if you are looking for academically challenging classes. The teachers in those higher level classes tend to be engaging and good at instructing advanced students. Some of the normal level teachers can be less so, but most of the teachers do care about the students and their academic success. There are many types of classes available at the high school. The core classes are solid and often have honors and AP options. Many creative classes are available including: multiple choirs, bands, and a variety of art classes. The school also has a successful AVID program available in every grade. The school is proud to support many different sports. The girl’s basketball teams and girl’s soccer teams are known to be very successful. Right now, the swim team is one of the largest the high school has seen in years and lacrosse has become a very popular sport now. A unified sports team option has also come about in the last few years. Many less popular options are also available, though they are often overlooked and somewhat unknown. These include the boy’s and the girl’s golf teams, bowling, equestrian and rugby. It is evident that the administration tries their best, but sometimes they are not very effective. Some decisions are laughable and not all of the rules are effectively enforced. Last year, new rules were put in place to try to keep students from leaving the classroom. This rule’s success lasted about a month to the amusement of the student body. This year, the administration is really strongly upholding a new system where a paper pass must be filled out each and every time a student leaves during class. This is a nuisance not only to the students, but to the teachers as well. Sometimes teachers must stop what they are doing to sign a slip. I know a lot of seniors who hate this policy because they feel we should not have to follow the same rules that are in place to control immature freshmen. You can tell that the administration and the school board do not seem to understand the students as well as teachers do. I believe the worst facet of the school is the facilities. I personally tend to feel decently safe, but I know that others are often more worried than I am about campus safety. We have had one lockdown and one lockout situation this year, and while no harm came to pass, being in the school does not feel quite as safe. Safety measures have been taken though to improve the school’s safety and during school hours we always have at least on police man on campus. Inside the school it is not uncommon to see bathrooms closed because of vandalism. Bullying is certainly not unheard of either. Over all Oregon City is a good school that is in a nice, and fairly quiet community. The school has many amazing and engaging classes, though every once in a while, a student will find a class or teacher they do not appreciate. Most sports are well supported and enjoyed by both the students and the community as a whole. While the facilities could be improved, there are far more positives than negatives to be seen.
