It is not easy to compile a list of New York famous food establishments. After all, as a world crossroads destination, the Big Apple is well-situated to offer a taste of everything. However, when one thinks of NYC cuisine, it comes down to what is specifically identifiable with the city itself.
Manhattan houses the well-known Masa, one of the most expensive restaurants in the world. Make your reservation at least three weeks in advance and bring a thousand dollars or so for you and your date. But Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs of Coney Island is every bit as much a part of Empire State cuisine, and no visit to Metropolis would be complete without at least one of these renowned delicacies.
Speaking of the Empire State, a trip to the top is on everyone’s itinerary. All of that “ooh”-ing and “ahhh”-ing builds up a hearty appetite, which is why the tower offers several restaurants and clubs located on the premises. Check out the Empire Room for a journey back in time to the city’s golden age, or give the Heartland Brewery and Rotisserie a try for more modern fare.
No literary enthusiast can pass up an opportunity to patronize the bar of the Algonquin Hotel, home base of the famed literary and theater personalities of the Roaring 20s-era Algonquin Round Table. Sardi’s in the theatrical district dovetails nicely with this literary theme. History buffs might prefer a meal at Fraunces Tavern, site of General George Washington’s farewell address at the close of the Revolutionary War.
Yet, no tour of New York City taverns would be complete without a stop at the most famous one of all—the Tavern on the Green in Central Park. Less of a restaurant than a Visitor’s Center today, it is still the Tavern on the Green and must not be missed. The same goes for the most soulful of all soul food establishments, Sylvia’s Restaurant, or the famous real life soup nazi—Al Yeganeh, the Original Soup Man.
When it comes to New York City restaurants, there is something for everybody to experience and enjoy, and no person should give up an opportunity to visit the Big Apple.
