Thomas Jefferson's MonticelloAttractions » Historic Landmarks931 Thomas Jefferson Parkway, 22902View siteMonticello, Italian for 'little mountain', is a historical landmark located two and half hours south of our nation's capital outside of Charlottesville, Virgina. The sprawling 5,000 acre estate was once home to its designer, former President Thomas Jefferson and an estimated hundred slaves. Placed on top of a hill, the main house is a 43 room neoclassical inspiration that took forty years to complete. The signature octagonal dome that outlooks the gardens was the first in America. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Monticello is now run by a non profit organization. It is been open to the public for guided tours of the main house as well as the outbuildings and gardens, weather and seasons permitting.
