First, I will begin with a small backstory on myself. I am a senior at Ashland High School, looking to graduate in May of 2019. I have lived in several different states, five in total ranging from the mid-west to the east coast to Oregon on the west coast. This has allowed me to emerge myself in many cultures around the United States with different schooling system. When I look at every education system I have been apart of, Ashland is definitely ranked in the top section. In the Rogue Valley, Ashland High is known for its education and other extra-curricular activities rather than only focused on sports like Crater High School, for example. The academics challenge every student to improve themselves at whatever level they see themselves at, from the alternative education programs like Catalyst, a full-day program allowing these students to work at their own level, to the numerous Advanced Placement classes available with credit given from Southern Oregon University, which is located across the street from the high school. The teachers show themselves as a resource to the students, wanting them to succeed in their goals for now and in the future, rather than a just being an instructor that does not place themselves into the learning process. The teachers not only want their students to succeed in the classroom, but in their activities outside of school as well. Many show this by attending sport's games, debate tournaments, theatre productions, and more. The administration shows that their full interest is in the students by working with the school's student co-presidents to address issues the student body sees as important. This can be as small as filling potholes in the parking lot to changing how classes address specific issues to create a more accepting environment in the classroom.Something the coaches are encouraged to teach throughout the game are ways to address life lessons through the basic exercises of the sport. This is majorly stressed in order for the student to succeed not only in school, but in life afterwards with the relationships they make and more. For example, my soccer coach would always tell us about the importance of if we were not trying to push ourselves to the best of our ability everyday in practice, then how would we improve, since we were only learning how to skip around the edges to "pass the test". Ashland, Oregon is known for being the home of Shakespeare, holding the Oregon Shakespeare Festival throughout the year. The theatre productions at the high school are pushed to another level with this inspiring influence, not only being able to learn from the best, but also being given the opportunity to use props from their plays and more. The school's debate team has also been able to be extremely successful for multiple years, with the guide of fantastic teachers and the opportunity to participate in many tournaments throughout the United States. The school also offers several club sports like the Water Polo team was taken to State this past season. If I had to say one thing I appreciated the most about the school, it would be the extremely accepting environment the students learn in. No matter what background you come from, or who you see yourself to be, you will be loved and supported. This school has allowed me to find my strengths through the support of my teachers and the community, challenging students to find out how they can benefit the world around them.Something I dislike about the school would have to be it's limit on diversity. Ashland is known for being in it's own little bubble, not experiencing the diverse cultures and opinions seen throughout the United Sates. The area is known for being very liberal, as well as mostly having a community of white people. This would be the one disadvantage I would see affecting the school system, since I have lived in places like conservative Baptist towns in Oklahoma to politically diverse cities in North Carolina.
