The tomb was founded in 1921 to house the remains of an American soldier of World War One in honor of those who died and lost without their identity. Subsequently, the remains of unknown soldiers since then for World War Two, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War have also been placed there. Each of the unknown soldiers has been granted the Medal of Honor. Over 500,000 people visit the tomb annually from around the US and the globe. They come to see, to honor, and show respect for those who have been lost in America's wars of the 20th century by laying wreaths and witnessing the changing of the guard. Admission is free but it's asked that visitors be silent or speak softly while in admittance.
